The conference room is booked from two to two thirty, and it is the only room with a door.
His manager has a laptop open and a printed copy of the form turned so they can both see it. Five competency areas down the left, and a column on the right where somebody has typed exceeds, meets, meets, developing, developing. There is a bowl of mints in the middle of the table that nobody has ever eaten from. Last quarter's numbers are still half erased on the whiteboard. Through the blinds, the parking lot, and a maple that has finally gone.
It is a decent review. His manager likes him. The word developing is being used kindly, the way it is meant to be used, and there is a plan attached to it with two dates on it.
He is nodding. He is saying the right things. And somewhere around the third row he stops hearing her, because he has noticed something, and once a man notices it he cannot stop noticing it.
He runs this exact meeting on himself. Every Sunday night, in the truck, in the driveway, with the engine off.
Same five rows. Prayer life: developing. Patience with the kids: developing. The thing he does with his phone at eleven at night: developing. Anger, which he would rate honestly if anybody asked, and nobody ever does. And down at the bottom, in the box where a manager would write overall, the same two words he has been writing since he was twenty nine.
Not there yet.
Fifteen years of quarterly reviews on his own soul, conducted alone, in a parked truck, with himself as the reviewer, the reviewed, and the only witness. Nobody has ever seen the form. It has never once come out exceeds. And what has crept in over the last few years, quietly, is not that he is failing the review. It is a suspicion about what the flat line means. If a thing was truly made new, would it not have moved a column by now?
The meeting ends. She thanks him. He walks out with the printed copy in his hand and does not know where to put it down.
You know the form. Yours might be a note in your phone, or a list in the back of a journal, or nothing written down at all, just the same five rows you go through in the dark before you sleep. And you know the box at the bottom, and the two words that have been sitting in it for years.

The form was never the instrument
Let me start where a shepherd starts, which is with what kind of thing we are handling.
A review measures output. That is not an insult to it. It is a good tool used properly: work goes in, work comes out, somebody counts it and tells you honestly how it went. Every farm I have ever stood on runs on some version of that form, and so does every job worth doing.
But the new birth is not output. It is not a thing a man produces on a schedule and it was never described that way.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.2 Corinthians 5:17
Notice the grammar of it. Paul does not write that a man in Christ is improving, or trending, or on plan. He writes a flat statement about a category. New creature. That is not a rating, and there is no scale under it, because you cannot be somewhat a new creature the way you can be somewhat proficient at spreadsheets.
You are handling a thing that was never built to be measured quarterly, and Scripture is where that shows up plainly. 2 Corinthians 5:17 makes a statement about what a person in Christ IS rather than about how well he is doing, and it is His Spirit who does the making, which is exactly why no man has ever been asked to grade the work of God with a pen he brought himself.
Hidden is not missing
Now to the sentence I would put on the whiteboard over last quarter's numbers.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.Colossians 3:3
Sit on the word hid a minute, because in ordinary speech it has gone bad on us. We hear hidden and we think lost, mislaid, cannot find it, probably not there. That is not what the word is doing here at all.
Hidden here is what a man does with the deed to the farm. He does not leave it out on the kitchen table where the coffee is. He puts it somewhere it cannot be spilled on, burned, or argued with. Hidden means secured. It means the location has been chosen precisely so that nothing local can reach it.
And look at the address. Not hid in your feelings. Not hid in your consistency. Hid with Christ, in God. Two layers, and neither one of them is you.
You have a life whose location is the whole point of the sentence, and it is not filed anywhere a form can get at it. Colossians 3:3 puts it with Christ in God, and the Spirit is the one who keeps a truth like that from being merely poetic, because He is the one who joined a person to Christ in the first place.
So what does the form in the truck actually see? It sees the visible. It sees Tuesday. It sees whether you were short with your son on the way to practice, which is a real thing and worth minding. What it cannot see, by design, is the thing Paul says is hid.
You are running an instrument over a surface it was never able to read, and the word of God says so in one sentence. Colossians 3:3 places the life out of reach of the very column you have been filling in, and it is the Spirit who bears witness about a person's standing before God, a job never handed to a man alone in a parked truck at nine on a Sunday night.
Grading and growing are two different jobs
Now hear me, because there is a ditch on this side of the road too, and I have pulled men out of it.
None of this makes the five rows pointless. Patience matters. What a man does with his phone at eleven at night matters. Growth is real, Scripture asks for it plainly, and a shepherd who told you otherwise would be no shepherd. The next verses in that same chapter are a list of things to put off and put on, which is about as practical as writing gets.
But there is all the difference in the world between tending a field and digging up the seed every week to see whether it took. One of those is farming. The other one looks like diligence and is actually an audit, and no crop on earth has ever survived it.
The man in the truck is not lazy. He is the most diligent man in this story. He has simply been using a good tool on the wrong object, and the tool keeps returning the only answer it is capable of returning.
You are free to work the field without excavating the root every Sunday, and it is the written word that gives that freedom, not my opinion. Colossians 3 says put off and put on and never once says dig it up to check, and it is His Spirit who works in a person over years and does not report progress on a schedule a man sets.
Here is what happens now, with a printed form in your hand and a maple going gold through the blinds.
The instrument gets set down. Not thrown away, and not because the five rows were dishonest. Set down, because the thing you have been trying to weigh has been kept somewhere the scale does not reach, and you have been standing in a room straining to hear through a wall God Himself put up on purpose.
You are looking at the wrong page for the answer you actually want, and the right page has an address written on it. Colossians 3:3 tells you where the life is kept, with Christ, in God, and it is the Spirit who takes an address like that and makes it a place a man can rest instead of a phrase he can quote.
And then the second thing, the one I would lean on the table to say.
You have permission to stop being your own reviewer, because that seat was never yours, and the word of God is what vacates it. Scripture gives the judging of a servant to his own master and never to the servant himself, and it is His Spirit, not a man's Sunday night arithmetic, who is the witness in that matter, which means the flat line in the box at the bottom was never a verdict on anything.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud, standing up, before you go back through that door. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that union, not a column and not a streak, is what gives a man the right to open his mouth. Scripture is the ground here and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries the words, so a voice that sounds tired carries them exactly as far as a voice that sounds sure. And what God does with them is His own business, in His own way and however He answers, which is a mercy, because it was never a thing a man could manage.
- Form with my name at the top, you are a page about work and nothing else. It is written in Colossians 3:3 that a life in Christ is hid with Him in God, and hidden means filed and kept, never missing. I am putting you face down on the table with the Holy Spirit standing over the whole business.
- Fear that fifteen flat years mean nothing was ever done in me, get out of this building, in the name of Jesus. It is written in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that if any man be in Christ he is a new creature, and His Spirit is the one who does the making, not the man filling in the boxes at nine on a Sunday night.
- Lord, Your word says the life is hid with Christ in God, and it is written in Colossians 3:4 that Christ is our life. So You are keeping what no quarterly column was ever built to reach, and You are not waiting on my scores to keep it. I am going back to my desk with Your Spirit carrying this, and the pen stays down.
