The string will not sit right on the box. She has tied a thousand of these, two loops and a pull, and this one is fighting her because the person on the other side of the counter is somebody she has not seen since school, and the person on the other side of the counter has just said, "You're different."
Saturday, her uncle's bakery, the line out to the door the way it always is by half past nine. Sesame on the counter, the ovens making the back room a furnace, her cousin shouting numbers. And in the middle of it, over the glass, an old friend with a tray of pastries she did not come in for, looking at her the way you look at a house you used to live in.
"What happened to you? You seem lighter. Did something happen?"
She wants to say nothing happened. She also wants to say everything happened, and both of those are true and neither is an answer, so what comes out is a laugh, and the box, and "That's twelve fifty," and the bell over the door. The friend goes. The line moves. And she stands there with flour on her hands and a question she could not answer, because she went looking inside herself for the thing that changed and could not find a single item she would be willing to say out loud.
She knows what she is supposed to have. She has heard people stand up and say it, the night, the date, the before with the drink and the after with the smile. She has no before like that. She has a Tuesday when something turned. She has a few things that used to matter and now do not, and a few that never did and now do, and none of it would survive being read out at a table. If somebody asked what is different about her, she would struggle to answer. And somebody just did.
You know that counter. You have stood at it, with a bag or a box or a phone in your hand, and been asked the kindest question in the world, and gone looking inside for the evidence and come back with your hands empty. And the emptiness felt like a verdict.

The farmer who does not know how
Say the weight first, honestly. It is not that you doubt God. It is that the audit of yourself has been running quietly for years, and it keeps returning the same finding: nothing you could put on a slide. Other people have a story with a hinge in it. Yours has no hinge, only a slow turn you cannot date, and somewhere the suspicion set in that a turn you cannot date is a turn that did not happen. So when a friend says you seem different, the first thing you feel is not gladness. It is exposure. She has seen something you cannot produce.
Jesus told a story for exactly this. Not for the farmer with a harvest to show, but for the one standing in a field that looks the same as it did last week.
The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.Mark 4:26 to 28
Read the middle of it slowly. He sleeps. He rises. He does not know how. The one thing the farmer in that story cannot do is explain the growing, and Jesus does not present that as the farmer's failure. He presents it as the shape of the kingdom. The earth produces by itself. The word Mark uses there is the one we get automatic from: of its own accord, without the farmer's supervision.
So hear this over your own field. You have a life in you that you did not manufacture and are not asked to explain, and the growing of it is God's work and not your report. That is not my thought about you. It is what is written in Mark 4, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the growing in the dark where you cannot watch it, which is why you cannot watch it.
What Nicodemus was told at night
The phrase itself came out of a night conversation. A respectable man came to Jesus after dark with a careful opening, and Jesus went straight past it: unless someone is born from above they cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus asked how, and it is worth noticing that Jesus never told him how. He told him what it was like.
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.John 3:8
You hear its sound. You do not know where it came from or where it is going. That is not a description of the weak version of the new birth, the one for people without a story. That is Jesus describing every single person born of the Spirit, the dramatic ones included. Nobody who has been born from above can tell you where the wind came from. Some of them can tell you the night they first noticed it, and that is a lovely thing to be able to say. It is not the wind.
Which means the friend across the counter was not wrong and neither were you. She heard the sound. You went looking for the source. Scripture says the source is not available for inspection, to anybody, and the Spirit who is that wind has never once asked a person to hand over His flight path before He would move.
Now let me be careful with you, because this site does not tell anyone whether the wind has blown through them. That is His to say and He says it Himself, and no article gets to stand in for that. What I can tell you is what the new birth is: a life given from above, God's doing, grown by God, and not graded by the length of the list a person can produce about it. If that is what you have, then you have a thing that was never yours to prove. The written word calls it a new creation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was breathed into it, and He did not leave a receipt.
What is actually different, honestly
There is a way of writing about "what changes" that is really advertising. Everything is different, all at once, the old is gone. Paul does say the old has passed away and the new has come. He also spent most of his letters telling people who were plainly born of God to stop doing things people born of God apparently still did. Both are true. The birth is complete. The growing is a growing.
So the honest look is smaller than the advertisement and better than it. Something in your wanting has turned. A thing you used to reach for you now reach for less, or reach for and feel a small grief that was not there before. A person you could not stand you now pray for, badly, at odd moments. Scripture is a page you read as though it were addressed. That is a short list. Read Mark 4 again: the blade comes before the ear, and nobody in the story is embarrassed by the blade.
You are allowed a short list, and the shortness of it is not a finding against you. God's word puts the blade before the grain and does not apologize for the order, and it is His Spirit who decides which comes up first in your particular soil, in His own time. I am not going to grade what you found. Neither is He. He planted it.
Here is what turns. Not a longer list. The end of the audit.
You have been standing at your own counter asking yourself the friend's question and marking your own answer, and the marking is the thing that has to go. The Word puts the seed in the ground and the growing in God's hands and the knowing-how out of the farmer's reach altogether. The Spirit does not report to you. He grows.
So when the question comes again, and it will come, from a friend or from your own head at two in the morning, you have a true answer that is not a performance: something is different, I did not do it, and I cannot fully tell you how. That is not evasion. That is Mark 4, said by the person it happened to.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud, with the one small thing still in your mouth. The standing to speak them was delegated to you by the One who does the growing, and it does not depend on the length of your list. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit and not your certainty is what carries them. Jesus said whoever says to the mountain, be removed, and does not doubt, will have what he says. Says, out loud. The mountain in this bakery is a question you have been failing yourself on. Speak to it, then to the fear underneath it, then to Him. What He grows and how fast is His, in His own way and His timing is His own.
- Question across the counter, you get the truth and not a performance. Scripture says the seed sprouts and grows while the farmer sleeps and he does not know how, and I am allowed to be the one who does not know how.
- Fear that my short list is a verdict, get out of this field in the name of Jesus. It is written that the blade comes before the grain, and nobody in that field is embarrassed by the blade, and the Spirit who planted this decides what comes up first.
- Lord, You are the one growing what You gave me, You wrote it in Mark 4, and I thank You that You have never once asked me for the receipt. I hear the sound of the wind and I do not know where it came from, and I am done auditing what You are watering.
