The dome light goes off by itself after thirty seconds, and she does not put the key in.
The parking lot is emptying out one car at a time. Somebody taps the horn twice on the way past and she lifts a hand without looking. There is a cup of coffee in the holder from before the service that she forgot about and it is stone cold. Her phone is face up on the passenger seat with a message half typed to her sister that says tonight was good and then stops, because she cannot work out what to put after it.
Tonight was testimony night, and it was good. Three people stood up. A man in his fifties who described the exact hour it happened to him and said that by the next morning the thing he had done every day for twenty years was simply not in him anymore. A young woman who cried the whole way through and said she woke up different. A third who said he did not recognize the person he had been the week before.
And she believed every one of them. That is the part she wants somebody to understand. She was not sitting there cynical. She clapped. She meant it.
But she has been at this eleven years, and on the way out to the car she did the thing she always does, which is to run the honest inventory, and here is what she came up with. She is slightly kinder. That is it. That is the list. She does not snap at the woman on the phone at the pharmacy anymore. She lets people merge. She thinks about her mother more generously than she used to and she is not entirely sure when that started. Slightly kinder. Eleven years.
She says it out loud in the car, to nobody, to see how it sounds. It sounds like almost nothing. It sounds like the kind of answer you give when you do not have one.
You know the car. Yours might be a kitchen at eleven at night, or the drive home from a small group where everybody else had something, or a form with a box on it that says share what God has done. And you know the inventory, and how short the list came out, and how quiet you got afterward.

The man in the parable is asleep
I want to put a story of Jesus in that passenger seat, because He told one about exactly what was happening in that parking lot.
The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.Mark 4:26-27
Read that again slowly, because there is something almost comic in it. The man is asleep. Every night. He is not out there at two in the morning with a flashlight measuring anything. The growth is happening on a schedule he does not set, by a mechanism he cannot see, at a rate that has nothing to do with how carefully he watches, and Jesus says twice in one breath that the man does not know how it works.
You are looking at the only progress report the kingdom actually issues, and it is written that the man knows not how. That is not a gap in the parable, it is the point of the parable, and the Holy Spirit put a sentence in the Gospel of Mark that removes the audit from the farmer's hands entirely, which is why an inventory taken in a parking lot has always felt like the wrong instrument.
And then Jesus says how it comes: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. Three named stages, and the first one is a green shoot you could stand on without noticing. Nobody in that parable inspects the blade and pronounces it disappointing. The blade is not a failed harvest. The blade is what a real living thing genuinely looks like at that hour of its life, and there is not one word in the passage about how long any stage is supposed to take.
You have a growing thing on your hands and not a stalled one, and the word says the earth produces of itself while the farmer sleeps. Scripture assigns the growing to God, plainly and repeatedly, and the Spirit who gives the increase does not report His progress to the one He is growing.
The wrong instrument in your hand
Now let me name what was actually in your hand in the car, because it matters.
It was a measuring device built for velocity. Testimony night is a beautiful thing and I will not say a word against it: those three people stood up and told the truth and God got glory in that room. But a testimony is a story, and a story needs a before and an after and a turn in the middle, so the ones that get told most are the ones with the sharpest turn. That is not a conspiracy. It is just what a story is. And after enough of them, a person starts to believe that speed is the evidence and that slow means nothing happened.
God does not use that instrument. Listen to Him describe His own work, in His own words, through Ezekiel, and count how much of it is His.
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.Ezekiel 36:26
I will give. I will put. I will remove. Not one clause of that is a description of somebody improving, and the very next verse puts His own Spirit inside the person as the one who does the walking out of it.
You were on the receiving end of that, not the performing end, and it is written as a set of promises God makes about what He Himself does. The Holy Spirit is the one who came to live in believers as the seal on it, and a seal is not something a person is asked to demonstrate before it counts.
So the question in the car was never how much have I changed. The question underneath it, the one that actually had teeth, was whether anything real is there at all. And that question does not get answered by a longer list. It gets answered by whose work it is.
Kindness is not the consolation prize
Now here is the thing I most want you to hear, and I want to be loud about it, because it has been sitting in front of you for eleven years with a label on it nobody ever read out to you.
You said slightly kinder like it was almost nothing.
Go and look at where Scripture files kindness. Paul lists what the Spirit of God produces in a person, and it is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. Kindness is on the list. It is not the runner up to the list. It is not what you get instead of the real thing. It is named produce, and Paul calls the whole list the fruit of the Spirit, which means it is not a personality trait a woman managed to cultivate over a decade of trying. It is what grows on a branch when the life in the vine is real.
You have named a fruit of the Holy Spirit and mistaken it for a shrug, and it is written in the letter to the Galatians in the plainest possible list. The Spirit produces it, Scripture says so by name, and produce grows out of life rather than effort, which means the item on your inventory that embarrassed you is the item that carries the most weight in it.
Not snapping at the woman at the pharmacy counter is not a small thing. Letting somebody merge is not a small thing. Thinking generously about your mother when you did not use to, and not being able to say when that started, is the exact phenomenon Jesus described: it sprouts and grows, and he knows not how.
You are carrying evidence you have been throwing away for eleven years, and the word says it is fruit, which means Someone else grew it. The Spirit who bears that fruit does not put a label on each piece announcing which day it appeared, so a person can walk around for a decade with an orchard behind them and an empty list in their hand.
Come back to the car, because I did not bring you this far to leave you sitting there with a cold coffee and a short list.
Everything you were missing in that parking lot is already written down. The word says the seed grows while the man sleeps and he knows not how. The word says first the blade, and the blade is not a failure. The word says I will give, I will put, I will remove, all of it in the first person, all of it His. The word says kindness is fruit that the Holy Spirit produces. There is no verse anywhere that asks a believer to produce a satisfying summary of themselves, and there is no verse that grades one inventory against another one.
So put the instrument down. Not because your list is longer than you thought, but because the list was never the evidence and the measuring was never your job.
You are eleven years into something that has been growing the entire time, and it is written that God gives the growth, not the planter and not the one watering. That is Paul's sentence and it settles who is responsible for the rate, and it is the Spirit of God, not the strength of a testimony, who has been doing the work in the dark while you slept.
And nobody is comparing you to the three people who spoke tonight. You are not in a race the word ever entered you into, and Scripture is the one that put the growth in God's hands and the sleeping in yours, and His Spirit is not divided between fast fields and slow ones.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud in the car before you pull out. The right to speak them does not come from the length of your list: Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that union is the ground a believer stands on to say anything at all. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them, so tired words carry as well as strong ones. What He grows next, and how fast, is His and not yours, and these go up under not my will but Thine.
- Eleven years that look like nothing much, you are a field with a living thing in you, and it is written that the seed sprouts and grows while the farmer sleeps. God is the one who has been growing it and He has never asked me to explain how.
- Voice that says a short list means nothing happened, be quiet and get out, in the name of Jesus. Scripture calls kindness the fruit of the Spirit, and I am not throwing away the evidence He grew just because it came up quietly.
- Father, You said You would give a new heart and put Your own Spirit inside, and it is written in the first person as Your doing from beginning to end. I am thanking You out loud tonight for one small thing that is Yours, and then I am driving home and leaving the measuring with You.
