The Photograph From Ten Years Ago

This message is for the woman looking at a photograph of herself from ten years ago and finding the same face, the same worries and the same short temper, and not knowing what she expected to see

The shoebox came down off the closet shelf because she was looking for a birth certificate, and she is still on the floor forty minutes later with her back against the bed.

Most of it is the children. Then, halfway down, a print of herself. Somebody else's camera, somebody's kitchen, a paper plate in her hand and a sweater she remembers because the cuffs went bobbled. Ten years ago, near enough.

She holds it up toward the window.

And she looks for the difference. She is not entirely sure when she started doing this, but she is doing it now, the way you check a receipt against a bank statement. Same face. A little less tired, which is annoying. Same slightly braced expression around the eyes, the one she makes when she is doing sums in her head about money. Same everything, honestly.

And what goes through her is not dramatic. It is quieter and worse. What did I think I was going to see?

Because the ten years were not empty. There were Bible studies and a lot of driving and two funerals and a season she prayed harder than she has ever prayed about anything. And here is the woman from the start of it, holding a paper plate, and here is the woman at the end of it, sitting on a bedroom floor, and they have the same short fuse with her middle child and the same three in the morning worries and the same face.

She puts the print back in the box. She does not put the box back on the shelf. She leaves it out, under the bed, where it will stay for eleven days.

You know the photograph. Yours might be a video somebody posted, or a Christmas card, or just a memory clear enough to compare against. And you know the check you were running, and the flat little answer it gave, and the question you did not say out loud to anybody afterward: if something happened to me, why does the evidence look exactly like this.

The Photograph From Ten Years Ago

A photograph cannot hold a road

Let me start with the physical fact, because it is not a metaphor and it does the most work.

A photograph is one two hundredth of a second. It records light on a surface. And there is a whole category of true things about you that it is simply unable to record, not because it is a bad photograph, but because of what a still frame is.

It cannot record speed. It cannot record which way you are facing in the sense that matters, only which way your shoulders were. Put two frames of a car side by side, ten years apart, and neither one tells you the car is moving, or where it is going, or that it turned around somewhere in between.

You are looking for a direction in a medium that has never once been able to hold one, and you were never given a bad picture. Scripture never asks a person to verify the new birth by comparing two images of themselves, and the Holy Spirit does not deposit His evidence on photographic paper, which is why the check keeps coming back inconclusive.

And notice what the camera did catch. It caught a face doing sums about money. That is not nothing. That is a woman who was worried on a particular afternoon in somebody's kitchen. What it could not catch is what she did with the worry that night, or who she took it to, or whether there was anyone to take it to at all.

You have ten years of interior traffic that no lens has ever been pointed at, and you were carrying it the whole time. It is written that God looks on the heart while man looks on the outward appearance (1 Samuel 16:7), and it is His Spirit who reads that interior, not a shoebox.

The verse is present tense and it is not about your face

Now to the sentence that gets quoted at people in exactly the wrong tense.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.Romans 12:2

Read what it actually says. Be ye transformed. The Greek behind it is continuous and it is passive: keep on being transformed, by something being done to you. Paul is not describing a finished renovation. He is describing weather that a person stands in.

And read where the transforming happens. By the renewing of your mind. Not the face. Not the temper first. The mind, which is the one part of you a shoebox has never photographed.

You are standing inside a present-tense sentence rather than failing a past-tense one, and you were never handed a deadline with it. Romans 12:2 has no schedule in it anywhere, and the Spirit is the one doing the renewing, at the pace He is doing it, without submitting a timeline to you first.

I want to be careful, because there is a cruel version of this teaching. The cruel version says: if you were really changed, the temper would be gone by now, so check again. That is not in the verse and it is not in the book. Paul wrote Romans 12 to people who were already in, and he wrote it in the imperative, which means the transforming was still in front of them and nobody was auditing them for it.

You are not under an inspection here, and you were not put on a clock. The word says the renewing is ongoing, and the same Spirit who begins a thing is the one who continues it, which means the pace is His business and not a verdict on you.

Where the change actually lives

So if not the face, then where. Let me say plainly what Scripture says is new, because it is more radical than the thing being checked for and it sits in a different place.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.2 Corinthians 5:17

Paul does not say the mannerisms are new. He says the creature is. That is a statement about what a person now is and whose they now are, at a depth a decade of photographs is not equipped to reach.

You have a word that speaks about the root rather than the branches, and you were reading it as a promise about your branches. 2 Corinthians 5:17 is written about the creature, and it is the Spirit, not the sound of the sentence, who makes that real in a person rather than merely stated over them.

And here is where the change tends to show, in my experience of sitting with people: not in the absence of the old reaction, but in the arrival of a witness inside it. The temper still goes off. What is different is that somebody is now home when it does. There is a wince that was not there before. There is a going back into the room. There is a grief over a thing that used to be simply what you were like.

That is not a small change. That is an entire second person present at every one of your worst moments, and it did not come from a self improvement plan.

You have company in the middle of your own temper now, and it is not the same as being alone in it. The word calls Him the Comforter who dwells with you and shall be in you (John 14:17), and the Holy Spirit is not a mood; He is the One who moved in.

The breakthrough

Here is what happens now, on the bedroom floor, with the box still open.

The audit ends. Not because the answer came back better, but because the wrong instrument was being used, and you have been holding a still frame up to a window and asking it to report on a road.

You are not the one carrying this work, and you were never the one who started it. It is written that the One who began a good work is the One who goes on with it (Philippians 1:6), and the Holy Spirit does not resign from a life halfway through because the face in the photograph has not caught up yet.

And the schedule goes back where it belongs. What He does with the ten years ahead is His, in His own way and at whatever pace He has chosen, and none of it waits on you producing a visible difference to justify the last ten.

You have a good work already begun in you, and it is already His to finish. Romans 12:2 says the transforming comes by a renewing that is happening now rather than one you have to manufacture, and the Spirit who does that renewing has been at it on every one of the days no camera was pointed at you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these three out loud with the box still open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing, rather than any difference you could photograph, is what gives these sentences their weight. Scripture is the ground under them and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them, so a flat voice on a bedroom floor carries them as far as a strong one anywhere else. What He does with the next ten years is His, in His own way and however He answers.

  1. Photograph from ten years ago, you are a still frame and a still frame cannot hold a road. Romans 12:2 puts the transforming in the present tense and in the renewing of a mind, so what is missing from you is motion, not evidence.
  2. Fear that nothing ever took root in me, get out of this house, in the name of Jesus. It is written that if any person is in Christ there is a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17), and the Holy Spirit who moved in is not a mood I failed to sustain.
  3. Lord, it is written that the One who began a good work in me is the One who goes on with it, and You have never once handed that job over to me. I am putting my hand on that picture tonight and saying so out loud, and Your Spirit is the one carrying it the rest of the way.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
