Quietly RebornJohn 3:8

The Van Ride Home

This message is for the woman on the church van coming home from a conference where the speaker said that if you cannot name the day it never happened, who cannot name the day and has been quiet for ninety miles

The church van smells like coffee and the inside of a cooler, and there are ninety miles left.

She has the window seat in the third row because she got in last. Her conference tote is on her knees with the free pen and the folded schedule and a paperback she is not going to read. Her name badge is still on its lanyard because taking it off felt like a statement. Somebody up front has a playlist going low. The woman across from her is asleep with her head against the glass and her mouth open, and two rows up somebody is still talking, happy and loud, about the second session.

Outside it is dark and flat, and the headlights keep finding the same white line.

The speaker said it in the last hour of the last day, and he said it kindly, which is what makes it stick. He said: friend, if you cannot tell me the day, I would gently suggest it never happened. And the room made that low warm sound a room makes when it agrees. And afterward, at the round tables with the styrofoam cups, people traded dates the way people trade birthdays. April of my junior year. A Tuesday. The parking lot of a Waffle House, three in the morning.

She was four. Or six. There is a photograph of her in a yellow dress on the church steps and she cannot tell you what year it is. She cannot remember a before. She has loved Jesus the way she has loved her own hands, without an origin story, and until eight hours ago she had never once thought of that as a hole.

Now it is a hole with a sentence in it.

So she has been quiet since the gas station outside Marion. Not upset. Quiet in the specific way of somebody doing arithmetic they cannot make come out. She keeps scrolling backward through a childhood looking for a doorway, and every year she checks has the same weather in it: church, and knowing, and no door.

Two rows up, the happy talking goes on. Somebody laughs. The white line keeps coming.

You know the van. Yours might be a small group, or a testimony night, or a form with a box on it, or one sentence from a platform that a kind man said to a warm room. And you know the arithmetic, and the particular exhaustion of running it in the dark while everybody around you sleeps or laughs, and the thing you have not said out loud to anybody on this trip.

The Van Ride Home

Nobody has ever traced the wind

Come and sit here where the map light reaches. I want to show you something Jesus chose on purpose.

He was talking at night with a teacher of Israel who wanted a mechanism. How can a man be born when he is old? How can these things be? And Jesus answered him with the weather.

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.John 3:8

Read what He did there, because it is deliberate. He picked the one thing in daily life that everybody can feel and nobody can follow home. You hear the sound of it. You watch it move the wheat and slam the screen door. And where it came from and where it is going is not information you have. He said the new birth is like that.

You are not being asked for information Jesus placed out of reach. John 3:8 is His own picture and His own limit, and the Spirit He named in the same breath is the one who blows where He wishes and files no flight plan with anybody. A date is a whence it cometh question. He said out loud that nobody can tell that one.

So when a sentence reaches a warm room saying the untraceable thing must be traced or it did not occur, that sentence has quietly moved the test from Christ to your recall. And I do not doubt the kindness of the man who said it. I doubt the sentence.

You were never handed the job of remembering your way into what God does. It is written that the wind blows and the sound is all you get, and it is the Spirit, not your memory, who did whatever was done in a girl in a yellow dress on some church steps.

Nobody in Scripture is asked for a date

Now let us go look, because this is checkable and I would rather you check it than take my word.

Paul writes letters to whole churches full of people, and he opens by telling them what they are in Christ, and he never once asks a single reader for a date. Timothy is told he has known the holy Scriptures from a child (2 Timothy 3:15), and there is no conversion story anywhere in either letter, and Paul does not go looking for one. In Acts, a woman named Lydia sits by a river and the Lord opens her heart to attend to the things spoken (Acts 16:14), and there is no drama recorded, no hour, no collapse, just an opened heart and a household. Households come in all the way through that book with no individual testimony written down for any of them.

And here is the one that undoes the whole argument. Paul is the man in the Bible who does have the date. The road, the light, the voice, the blindness, the three days. He could have made his own experience the standard for every believer after him, and he never does. He tells it to hostile crowds as testimony to Jesus, and when he writes about being in Christ he writes to people whose stories he does not know and does not require.

You have a place in every one of those letters, and none of it was ever addressed to the people who remembered a Tuesday. Scripture is written to believers, plainly, in the second person, and the Holy Spirit who inspired those letters wrote them wide open to a woman with no door in her childhood and a woman with a road and a light both.

I am not telling you a dramatic story is fake. Some people have one and it is true and God did it. I am telling you it was never the qualification, and the Bible does not hand you a form with a box for the year.

What the sentence did in the third row

Let me name what actually happened to you tonight, because it has been riding alone with you since Marion.

A sentence went into a warm room and it landed on you as a job. Go back through twenty five years, find the doorway, produce it. And the tiredness comes from working that job for ninety miles in the dark. That is not conviction. Conviction is specific and it comes with a direction and it never sends a person rummaging through her own memory for evidence about herself.

And hear me on this, because it matters more than anything else I will say on this ride: the weight of settling this was never put on you. It is not your work to establish. The burden here belongs to the ones who preach, and we carry it, and I am carrying it now. Where the burden lands is not a small thing. A message that leaves a person auditing her childhood has slid it onto her, and I will not do that to you at any speed.

You are held by a work of God rather than by the quality of your recollection. His word says of God, not of the will of man (John 1:13), and the Spirit who did that work is not waiting for you to corroborate Him before He continues.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns, in the third row, with ninety miles gone and the white line still coming.

You have been treating your memory as the courtroom, and the whole case as yours to prove. Put it down. Whatever God does in a person, He does; He is not less real for being unphotographed, and Jesus went out of His way to say that the where and the when of it is His business and not ours. That is not a loophole for people with no story. That is the doctrine, taught by Him, at night, to a man who wanted the mechanism.

You are not the one who has to settle this, and it was never handed to you to settle. John 3:8 puts the tracing beyond every reader who has ever lived, and the same Spirit who moved on the water at the beginning is the one at work here, and He has never asked anybody for a receipt.

So you can let your shoulders down against this seat. I will not tell you what God has done in you; that belongs to Him and He is entirely able to make it plain in His own time and way. What I will tell you is that a sentence from a platform is not the word of God, and the word of God has never asked a believer for a calendar. You can put the arithmetic down and watch the road.

Declare this over yourself

Now say these three, quietly if you like, with your head against the glass. The standing to say them is not a story and not a date. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what gives a voice in this van any authority at all. Scripture is the ground under every line of it and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, so a whisper in the third row carries exactly as far as a shout from a platform. And what God does with these words is His, at His pace, which we say gladly: not my will, but Thine.

  1. Sentence from the platform that says a day I cannot name is a day that never came, you are not Scripture and you do not get this van. John 3:8 says the wind blows where it wishes and nobody tells where it comes from, and I am riding home on the word of Jesus and not on the word of a microphone.
  2. Suspicion that I have been faking this since I was four, get out of this seat, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the new birth is of God and not of the will of man, and His Spirit is the one who does that work and keeps no ledger of my recall, so I am done running arithmetic in the dark and I am watching the road.
  3. Lord, You chose the wind Yourself and You said plainly that nobody tells where it comes from. It is written in John 3:8 and it never once asked me for a calendar, so I am not handing You one tonight. I am giving You the whole ninety miles and the years I cannot account for, and I am going home quiet on purpose now instead of quiet because I am afraid.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
