Fed And GrowingDeuteronomy 6:7

The Question at the Counter

This message is for the father whose fourteen year old asks him a real question about the faith at the kitchen counter, and who finds out, out loud and in front of his son, how little he can say

It is nine fifteen and the kid is eating cereal, which is his second dinner, and nobody in this house has ever successfully argued him out of it.

The father is loading the dishwasher with his back half turned, doing the thing where he rearranges what somebody else already put in wrong. The kitchen is that particular kind of quiet a house gets after everybody has stopped needing something. His son is fourteen, sitting on the counter stool with his headphones looped down around his neck, spoon in the bowl, scrolling with one thumb.

And without looking up, the kid says: "Hey. When people say born again. What actually happens? Like is it a thing that happens, or is it just a phrase people say?"

The father straightens up. And he is glad. That is the first thing, and it is real: a fourteen year old asked him an actual question about God at nine fifteen at night, unprompted, which is the thing he has quietly wanted for about six years.

Then he opens his mouth.

"Well," he says. And he means to keep going. "It's, uh. It's when you accept Jesus." Pause. "It's like a new start. Like you're a new person." He hears himself say like three times. "It's a spiritual thing. It's not, you know, physical." He is now holding a fork and gesturing with it. "It's, uh. It's kind of the whole thing, really."

Ninety seconds, maybe. Then it runs out.

And his son says, "Okay." Not sarcastic. Not disappointed. Genuinely fine. He takes his bowl to the sink, rinses it, puts it in the top rack in the wrong place, says goodnight, and goes down the hall.

The father stands in his own kitchen holding a fork.

It is not the kid. The kid is fine. It is that he has been in this twenty two years. Twenty two years of Sundays. He has been on a committee. He has driven vans. And when the one person he would give an arm for asked him what it actually is, he had ninety seconds of material and then air.

He finishes the dishwasher. He turns off the light over the sink. He goes to bed and lies there in the dark thinking the thought he would not say to anybody: twenty two years and I am exactly where I started. What have I been doing this whole time.

You know the counter. Yours might be a coworker's question in a break room, or a form you had to fill in, or a moment when somebody assumed you knew and you did not. And you know the part that stings, which is never the not knowing. It is the arithmetic afterward.

The Question at the Counter

That was the verse, actually

Let me tell you what was actually happening in that kitchen, because I do not think anybody has told you.

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Read where it puts the instruction. Not in a classroom. Not in a prepared talk with an outline. When you sit in your house. When you walk by the way. When you lie down. Those are the hours nobody schedules: the car, the hallway, the kitchen at nine fifteen with a bowl of cereal and a dishwasher door down.

You were standing inside Deuteronomy 6:7 with a fork in your hand, and you were doing the thing it actually describes. It is written as talk, not as lecture, and the Spirit who inspired that line put it in the ordinary hours on purpose, because that is where a house is built. Your son asked. You answered. It was clumsy. It counted.

And notice the order in the passage, because it matters and it will take some weight off you. The words go on the heart first, and then they get talked about. It never says first master the explanation, then you may open your mouth. The talking is part of how it gets into the heart, and not a report issued after the fact.

You have been given a house to speak in, not an examination room, and it is already settled that God asked for the conversation and not the transcript. His word describes a family talking about Him along the way, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the depositing while the talking is going on, which is why a fumbled answer in a kitchen is not a wasted one.

The farmer does not know how either

Now here is the one I want you to sleep with tonight, and Jesus told it about exactly this.

The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.Mark 4:26-28

He knows not how. That is in the story on purpose. Jesus could have told a parable about a farmer with expertise. He told one about a man who scatters, sleeps, gets up, sleeps again, and finds the field further along than he left it, with no idea what happened in the dirt overnight.

You are not required to be able to narrate the process, and you were never the one running it. Mark 4:27 says the man knows not how, and it is His Spirit who is doing the work underground, in the dark, on nights when a man goes to bed feeling like he wasted twenty two years.

And look at the sequence. First the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. Three stages, in order, none skipped, none hurried. Nobody in that parable stands over a green shoot demanding to know why it is not grain yet. The blade is not a failed ear. The blade is a blade, right on time, doing what a blade does.

You have a growth that is not on your schedule and not on anybody else's either, and His word never once printed a timetable for it. The Spirit gives the increase, as Scripture says plainly, and He has not asked me or you or the person next to you on Sunday to audit the rate.

Hunger is the sign, not inventory

So what is the actual measure? Because you are going to want one, and the honest answer is not the one you would pick.

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.1 Peter 2:2

The picture is an infant, and the sign of health in an infant is appetite. Not vocabulary. Not the ability to describe digestion. A hungry baby is a well baby, and every parent in the world knows it at two in the morning.

Which brings me back to your kitchen. What actually happened in you after your son went down the hall? You wanted to be able to say it. That want is not nothing. That is the exact thing 1 Peter is talking about, and it showed up in you unbidden at nine fifteen at night while you were holding a fork.

You are hungry, and Scripture calls that the sign of something alive rather than the sign of something behind. The word puts longing at the front of growing up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man hungry in his own kitchen, so the ache you took to bed was not an accusation. It was an appetite.

And one more thing your son got that you have not counted. He asked his father a real question and his father did not fake an answer. Not one invented sentence. Not one borrowed line delivered with confidence to cover the gap. A fourteen year old can smell a bluff at forty feet, and yours got a man who would rather run out of words than hand him a fake one.

The breakthrough

Here is what happens now, tonight, in the dark, with the arithmetic still running.

You take the ninety seconds out of the ledger, because it was never a measurement. It was one conversation, at the end of a long day, on a subject the greatest minds in church history have needed whole lifetimes to get their arms around. You did not fail an examination. There was no examination. There was a boy on a stool and a father who kept talking anyway.

You are further along than the last five minutes can show, and it is already finished in the ground where you cannot see it. Mark 4 says the seed grows while the man sleeps and he knows not how, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that growing, on His own schedule, without filing progress reports to the man in the field.

And the twenty two years are not gone. Every van you drove, every Sunday you sat through when you would rather have stayed home, every committee: none of that was tuition on a course you flunked. It was weather. Rain and sun over a long season, and none of it was wasted just because you cannot itemize it.

You have a God who gives the increase Himself, and His word says so flatly, so the growing was never resting on your ability to explain it. The Spirit has been at work in the hours you were not watching, and the man in the parable found the field further along every single morning without once understanding the mechanism.

Declare this over yourself

Say these three out loud in the kitchen before the light goes off. The right to speak them was not earned in the last ninety seconds or the last twenty two years: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the ground you stand on to say anything at all. Scripture holds every one of these up and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them, so a voice with nothing left in it tonight carries them exactly as far as a rested one. Speak to what happened at the counter, then to what it started in you, then to Him, and hand Him the outcome under not my will, but Thine.

  1. Ninety seconds I could not fill at my own kitchen counter, you are not the measure of twenty two years. Scripture says talk of them when you sit in your house, Deuteronomy 6:7, and that is a conversation and never an examination.
  2. Fear that says a man who cannot explain it never really had it, get out of this kitchen, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the seed sprouts and grows while the farmer sleeps and he knows not how, Mark 4:27, and the Holy Spirit has been growing what I could not narrate.
  3. Lord, You are the one who gives the increase, and it is written that neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but You. So I am walking back down that hall with the one true sentence I have, and I am leaving the rest of the answer with You.
