The Morning She Overslept

This message is for the woman who has quietly made her quiet time the thing that decides whether God is pleased with her, on the morning she overslept and could not shake the feeling of having lost her standing

The alarm is set for five twenty five, and it has gone off at five twenty five every weekday for two years and eight months, and this morning she does not hear it.

She wakes at seven forty. Sun already all the way through the blinds, a bird being loud about something, the whole light of the room wrong.

Downstairs, on the counter, the mug is where she left it upside down on the towel. The chair by the window has the blanket over the back of it, folded the way she folds it. The book is there with the green ribbon in Jeremiah, and the notebook beside it, and the pen on top of the notebook.

None of it has been touched, and she cannot look at any of it.

She makes coffee she does not want. And the thing that follows her around the house all day is not tiredness, and it is not really regret about a missed hour. It is more like a demotion.

Because the day feels different. That is what she notices. Something in her is standing further back than usual. When she prays at eleven, in the car, at a light, she can hear herself being a little formal about it. When she thinks about the conversation she has to have this afternoon, she notices she has stopped assuming He is on her side of it. Nothing dramatic. Just a half step back, the way you stand when you have arrived somewhere without being sure your name is on the list.

And she knows, because she is not a fool, that this is nonsense. She could tell you what she believes about grace. She would say it to a friend in five seconds flat and mean it.

But she also knows, and this is the part that has been sitting on her all day, that at some point over these two years and eight months, that chair by the window quietly became the thing that decides. Not the birth. Not the cross. The chair. And this morning the chair was empty, and so she is standing further back.

You know the chair. Yours might be a reading plan with a streak counter on it, or an hour you do not miss, or a rule you made yourself years ago that has never once been renegotiated. And you know the half step back, and the day you spent taking it, and the fact that you have never once said any of this out loud to a living person.

The Morning She Overslept

What the alarm actually decided

Let me start by saying what I am not doing, because you will hear it wrong otherwise and it matters.

I am not about to tell you the chair does not matter. It matters enormously. Two years and eight months of sitting there is not a legalism, it is a friendship with a shape, and the reason this morning aches is that the missed thing was loved. That ache is not the problem. Keep the chair.

What I want to look at is a different question entirely. Not whether the morning is good, but what it has quietly been made to decide.

Because somewhere in there, the chair stopped being a table and started being a turnstile. A table is where you go to be fed by somebody who is glad to see you. A turnstile is where you present something in order to be let through. Same doorway. Completely different relationship, and only one of them leaves you standing half a step back on a Tuesday.

You are not standing at a turnstile, and you were never issued a card that gets declined at seven forty. Scripture nowhere makes the Father's disposition toward His own child an hourly setting, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a routine, who witnesses with your spirit about whose you are.

And look at what the alarm actually did this morning. It failed to make a noise, or it made one and your body did not surface. That is the whole event. It is a piece of consumer electronics and a tired woman.

You have exactly the standing at seven forty that you had at five twenty five, and it was already settled before either hour arrived. It is written that the gifts and calling of God are without repentance (Romans 11:29), and the Spirit who sealed a person does not unseal them over a snooze button.

He was singing before you woke up

Now here is the verse, and I want you to notice the time of day it is not attached to.

The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.Zephaniah 3:17

Read it as a description of what God is like toward His people rather than as a promise about a future afternoon. He is in the midst. He is mighty. He rejoices over them with joy. He rests in His love, which in the Hebrew carries the sense of going quiet in it, the way a person goes quiet holding something they love. And He sings.

That is God's own emotional condition toward His people, stated plainly, and there is no clause in it about their morning.

You were being sung over at five twenty five this morning while you were flat on your face asleep, and you have that whether or not you were awake for it. Zephaniah 3:17 puts the rejoicing in Him rather than in the observer, and the Spirit of God does not require your attendance in order to be doing what He is doing.

Sit with the strangeness of it. The singing did not start when you sat down in the chair, and it does not stop when you do not. If your presence at the window were what set it off, it would be a performance, and Zephaniah would be about you.

You are the one being sung over rather than the one holding the note, and it was already His before it was ever a habit of yours. The word says He joys over His people with singing, and the same Spirit who moved on a prophet to write it down is the one who makes it land on a woman in a bathrobe at eleven in the morning.

The birth was never maintained by the habit

Now to the thing under all of it, because the half step back is a birth question wearing a routine's clothes.

Paul asked a church that had gone strange on exactly this point one of the sharpest questions in the letters.

Having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?Galatians 3:3

He is not scolding them for effort. He is pointing out a switch that had happened underneath their effort. It began one way, by the Spirit, entirely as a gift, and somewhere along the line the maintenance had been quietly transferred to them, and nobody had announced it.

That transfer is what happened at some point in the two years and eight months. Not a decision. A drift.

You are not the one holding this up, and you were not the one who started it either. John 1:13 says the birth is not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God, and the Holy Spirit who did that is not now waiting on your alarm clock to keep it in force.

And here is why the chair still matters, which is the other half and I will not leave it out. A person who is fed goes back to where the food is. Not to be let in. Because they were hungry and it was good the last time. Obedience after the birth is not the price of the room; it is what a living thing does, the way a fed child comes back to a kitchen.

You have a table rather than a checkpoint, and it is already yours to sit at whenever you get there. It is written that man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God, which is the language of eating, and the Spirit is the one who makes the words on that page food rather than a task.

The breakthrough

Here is what happens now, in the kitchen, with the blanket still folded over the back of the chair.

The demotion is canceled, because it was never issued. No verse in Scripture withdraws a standing over a missed hour, no page in it grades a child of God by attendance, and the half step back you have been taking all day came out of a drift and not out of the book.

You are in the same place with Him tonight as you were on your best morning, and you were never moved out of it. It is written that nothing separates from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:39), and the Holy Spirit is the one who settles that, which He does not do by checking a chair.

And the chair goes back to being what it was. Not a turnstile. A place you like, with a blanket and a green ribbon in Jeremiah, where you go because you were made hungry by somebody who is glad to see you and has been singing since before the alarm did not go off.

You have a Father in the midst of you who has not stopped singing all day, and that is already true rather than something to be restored. Zephaniah 3:17 puts Him in the midst rejoicing, and the Spirit who inspired it is at work in a kitchen at eleven in the morning as readily as at a window at five.

Declare this over yourself

Say these three out loud in the kitchen, in whatever you are wearing. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing, rather than the state of your streak, is what puts weight into a sentence like this. Scripture is the ground under the words and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so a voice at the wrong end of a wasted day carries them as far as a bright one at dawn. What He does with them is His, in His own way and however He answers.

  1. Morning I slept through, you are not a withdrawal from anything. Zephaniah 3:17 has God in the midst of His people rejoicing over them with singing, and that was as true at five thirty while I was asleep in it as it is now.
  2. Fear that I have to earn my way back into His face today, get out of this kitchen, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the birth is not of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:13), and the Holy Spirit who did that is not holding an alarm clock.
  3. Lord, Galatians 3:3 asks whether what began in the Spirit is now made perfect by the flesh, and the answer in me is that You began it and You are the one holding it. I am reading one verse out loud at the wrong hour today, and Your Spirit is making it a meal instead of a payment.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
